Located just a few minutes from the Swiss border, this picturesque village is a real hidden gem. With its old molasse stone houses and colourful façades adorned with hollyhocks, wisteria and climbing vines… take the time to stroll leisurely through the narrow streets of Nernier. Enjoy the peace and quiet and the unique atmosphere of the village and the lake, which will transport you far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Since the 14th century, the village has been a source of inspiration for many artists, painters and writers. It is therefore not uncommon to come across poems and frescoes carved into the stone as you wander the streets, paying tribute to the Romantic authors who passed through here: Alphonse de Lamartine, Lord Byron and Mary Shelley. The latter, inspired by the lake and the legendary presence of smugglers, is said to have written a few pages of her famous novel Frankenstein in Nernier.
Dubbed the ‘Village of Painters’ in the 1950s, thanks to the efforts of passionate art lovers and Enrico Vegetti, a Lombard artist and engraver who had been living in the village for many years, Nernier continues to uphold its artistic tradition today through its museums, galleries and local artisans.
As you explore the village, you’ll discover the unique five-gabled bell tower of Saint Martin’s Church, charming squares with restaurants and small bars, as well as the harbour, which welcomes pleasure craft and old sailing ships.
Whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure, Nernier has something for everyone. Explore the crystal-clear waters of Lake Geneva by boarding a CGN steamboat (during the summer season), or simply soak up the tranquillity of the place by settling down by the water’s edge with a good book.
Nernier is much more than just a tourist destination. It is an experience in its own right, a real favourite for all those lucky enough to discover it.
Guided tours of Nernier are organised for individuals during the school holidays and throughout the year for groups by booking. Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information.
